What we learned today

That distances on a crappy little map are deceiving, and that when you have 1mile left to go in the middle of a canyon....it is a HIKE and feels wayyyy longer than a mile.
We decided to do a trail while at the canyon to go see some waterfalls....we went down a road that said only 4wheel drive vehicles. Pretty, and in about 15 min or so we came to the end of it and to a sign for the trail....I guess that the fact that our falls were in the same direction of the "cliff canyon trail" should have given us a clue. So we went, very pretty forest-jungle type, with ups and downs...after a while we thought that for sure we were almost there. Found a hiker coming back who said something about a quarter mile left, so we kept going, and going and going. And we come up to this breathtaking view with the canyon on the right of the trail, but no falls yet. There is a couple there that tells us that the falls have been shut down for the reservoir....so now we find this out! But after going all this way, we keep going, and we start going down, a bit steep, lots of the red dirt so typical here. Finally we hear a trickle, and yup, that was it....those were the falls! Needlessto say that we came to understand why everyone we had seen coming back didn't look too happy, and looked pretty tired....mostly were regular tourists like us, not used to canyon type hikes. It was pretty and it was an adventure...but seeing some actual falls rather than a little pond with a tiny falls that you can see anywhere would have been even better. : )
